Question:
I have a cat that is 20 yrs. old & has lost quite a bit of weight and drinks a LOT of water. She seems to be eating more than usual as well.
Her name is Haywire & comes by the name naturally. She has always been indoors. I am very concerned about taking her to a vet, as she gets easily stressed & I don't want to add anymore at her age. Also her back legs are very stiff when walking which is probably arthritis. Could you please let me know what I can do for her at home to make her more comfortable. Thank you

Answer:
Thanks for your email.

You are very lucky to have her for 20 years. Anything y ou do might
not have a good outcome due to her age. She needs blood work to
check her kidney function, thyroid, glucose. After doing the bloodwork
you will be able to make a descion on what to do next. Kidney
issues mimick arthritis. weight loss and drinking alot can be diabetes,
If she gets really stressed they may have to use an inhalable anesthetic
to get the blood. this is a very safe way of getting blood if she gets
really stressed. Eating a lot more than usual can indicate hyperthyroid.
She really needs to be seen. You have to look at her quality of life and
what is the best for her.
